A sculpture’s bird of prey is set to soar into the New York City sky; a skyscraper rises to the clouds. The Falconer by English sculptor George Blackall Simonds rests on a granite pedestal atop a rocky outcrop along Terrace Drive in Central Park as the Central Park Tower stands 1,550 feet tall along “Billionaires Row” in midtown Manhattan. The Falconer is the park’s replica of the original statue located in Trieste, Italy. It was commissioned by George Kemp, a wealthy Irish-born businessman, after he observed and admired the original during his travels in Europe. Simonds’ bronze sculpture was dedicated to the park on May 31, 1875.Located at 225 W. 57th St., Central Park Tower is the second tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. It has 98 stories above ground (and three below), and offers views of the Atlantic Ocean and Appalachian Mountains. The skyscraper was designed by Adrian Smith Gordon Gill for Extell Development and constructed between 2014 and 2020 at a cost of $3 billion.

Balto was an Alaskan malamute that led a team of sled dogs and their mushers through an arctic blizzard on a mission to help save human lives. In early 1925, hundreds of people were suffering from an outbreak of diphtheria in Nome, Alaska. Starting in Anchorage, the team trekked some 600 miles through the storm and sub-zero temps to deliver an antitoxin serum to the coastal town on the Bering Sea. The trip reportedly took just over five days to complete, a world record time. Later that year, American artist Frederick George Richard Roth honored Balto with this sculpture that stands atop a rock outcrop near the Willowdell Arch in Central Park, Manhattan. The dog and his musher Gunnar Kassen were present for the unveiling. (Photo: © 2017 Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)

Shakespeare by WardThis statue of William Shakespeare is one of four sculptures by John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910) featured in New York’s Central Park. Created in 1870, the bronze sculpture was unveiled two years later and represents the first of a writer installed at the south end of the Mall, a stretch popularly known as Literary Walk. The Shakespeare Tricentennial Committee donated the statue to commemorate the 300th birthday of the English poet and dramatist, who was born at Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth (1833–1893) laid the cornerstone for the sculpture.************************************(Words/Photo: © Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)

Gapstow Bridge
Huddlestone Arch in Central Park’s rustic Ravine was constructed with Manhattan schist boulders that were “huddled” together without any mortar or steel supports. One of the slabs reportedly weighs 100 tons. Central Park co-creator Calvert Vaux and his assistant Jacob Wrey Mould designed and built the structure in 1866. "Imagine the day in 1866 when the interior scaffold was removed, and the crew, holding their breath, witnessed the success of this brilliant engineering and construction feat.,” write a Central Park historian.I took this photo in April 2016.
